History

Morgan Independence®

Barry Morgan the inventor of The Morgan Independence™ has suffered with Multiple Sclerosis for many years. During this period he utilised various tools and systems to ensure his continued freedom. However, eventually; as with many Multiple Sclerosis sufferers, Barry's condition deteriorated to the point where he was unable to use even a manual wheelchair. Looking around the market Barry quickly found out that the only alternative available to him was an expensive 'power chair' which required serious investment. This is because not only would Barry have required a new vehicle, but also expensive adaptations for that vehicle too.

This seemed a very costly and inelegant solution to Barry, so he took it upon himself to design and build his own mobility system, one that could bypass the expense of the other options. After some serious thought and determination Barry came up with the The Morgan Independence™ Trike and the associated Hoist. The system can be used with nearly all production cars, is very lightweight (both Trike and Hoist weigh only 28 Kilograms), and is so compact that it can even be taken on an aeroplane or used with the 4-seater smart car!

The Trike itself is very durable, comfortable, lightweight and most importantly, nimble. It will allow you to get about your home, local area, or shopping centre with ease. However, when used in conjunction with a car, it has no distance limitations at all. The Hoist attaches to your vehicle's roof rack and the Trike then connects to the Hoist with an easy to use clamp. From there you could drive to Romford via Rome and back again with no trouble at all. If your car can get there, the Morgan Independence™ system can get there too.

Using Your Car With The Mobility System

The Hoist works by taking a small amount of power from your car's electrical system or a standalone battery which in turn runs a motor which lifts the Trike onto the roof rack. If wired the Hoist will receive power via two small wires hidden within the car's bodywork. Standalone batteries require no wiring and are built into the Hoist, however standalone systems will require periodic re-charching when their power has been depleted.

If you ever wanted to sell your car, you could simply remove the Hoist (and wiring if attached to the car's power system) and fit it to your new vehicle. The system is installed in approximately two hours and usually requires no permanent changes to the car at all. Thus with the Morgan Independence™ the re-sale value of your car is not affected.

Would You Prefer to Buy the Trike Separately?

This is easily done. Barry designed the Morgan Independence™ to meet his own mobility needs, and to fill a gap in the market he saw for a truly independent mobility solution. However the Trike is completely independent of the Hoist, as it needs to be to function. Thus if you would prefer to purchase the Trike independently, you need only specify as such when ordering.
